How I Unleashed My Emotions Through Abstract Flower Painting: A Step-by-Step Guide on Using Acrylics and Watercolours

sarakbuckley

Art has an incredible ability to evoke emotions, especially abstract art, which allows us to explore feelings in unique ways. I always found comfort in colours, strokes, and forms, but it was through abstract flower painting that I learned to truly express my emotions. If you’re looking to channel your feelings onto the canvas, grab your brushes and join me on this exciting journey of artistic expression.

Understanding the Beauty of Abstract Art

Abstract art speaks a unique language. Unlike traditional art, which strives to mirror reality, abstract art embraces creative freedom and emotional expression. Each brushstroke can symbolize a feeling or memory, transforming the canvas into a tapestry of emotions.

For me, painting abstract flowers with a variety of mediums, became a path to emotional discovery. It’s not solely about the finished painting; it’s about the journey of self-exploration and the exhilarating freedom found in creating without limits!

Gathering Your Supplies

Before you start painting, gather your essential supplies. Having everything handy can help maintain your creative flow. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Acrylic Paints: Opt for vibrant colours that resonate with your mood—like bright yellows for happiness or deep blues for calmness. I recommend Golden as a brand of acrylics to use.

  • Watercolours: Excellent for adding a gentle, flowing quality to your artwork. Some fantastic brands to use that I fully recommend are Windsor and Newton Cotman range or if you want to spend a little more money, then professional grade watercolours such as Schminke, Sennelier or Holbein are great to use and little goes a long way.

  • Brushes: Invest in different sizes and shapes—round brushes for details, flat brushes for broad strokes and washes if using watercolour, and fine brushes for detail.

  • Canvas or Paper: Choose based on whether you prefer working with acrylics or watercolours. Canvas for acrylics and a watercolour paper, preferably cold pressed at around 300gsm.

  • Palette: Helpful for mixing your paints.

  • Water Cups: Essential for cleaning brushes and thining watercolours.

  • Paper Towels: Great for quick clean-ups and adjustments!

Once you have everything, you’re ready to dive in!

Step 1: Setting Your Intention

Before starting, take a few moments to centre yourself. What emotions do you wish to convey? It might be joy, nostalgia, or tranquillity. Setting your intention will help focus your mind and heart during the creative process.

Take a moment to meditate. Sit quietly, breathe deeply, and visualize the feelings you want to express on your canvas.

Step 2: Choosing Your Colour Palette

Colours convey emotions more powerfully than words. Think about the feelings you want to express when selecting your colours:

  • Warm Colours (such as reds and yellows): These often convey energy and passion.

  • Cool Colours (like blues and greens): These typically evoke calmness and serenity.

  • Earthy Tones: Great for a grounded and nurturing feel.

Personally, I love using vibrant pinks paired with calming blues for my abstract flowers. Don’t shy away from mixing your colours to see how they resonate with your emotions—experimentation is key!

Step 3: Sketching the Outline

Begin with a light pencil sketch on your canvas or paper. Accuracy isn't necessary; remember, this is abstract art! Sketch basic shapes like petals and stems, but allow space for creativity to take the lead.

As I sketched my flowers, my emotions began to flow. This initial step lets you outline your ideas while keeping your creative energy alive.

Step 4: Layering Your Acrylics

Acrylic paints are great for layering and creating depth. Start with your base colours, applying them with bold strokes—it’s where the fun starts! Don’t hesitate to mix colours directly on the canvas; blend and create textures naturally.

Let your emotions guide your hand. Feel passionate? Be assertive in your strokes. In a calm mood? Allow your brush to glide gently across the canvas for a softer effect.

Step 5: Incorporating Watercolours

Watercolours can give you a beautiful soft and calm look. Using a lot of watercolour on your paper before introducing your paints will create flowing patterns and soft edges, adding an almost ethereal quality to your work.

Allow your paper to dry of, then add other layers in the same fashion, or add slightly more thicker paint to your background and gradually build up your painting as you feel. There's no right or wrong when you paint in this way, just go with the flow.

Step 6: Adding Texture and Detail

With your base and watercolour layers in place, it’s time to add texture and fine details. Experiment with different brush techniques—you can dab, swirl, or flick the brush for unique effects. A palette knife can also create bold strokes, emphasizing depth and dimension. Make a collage of it......you don't have to stick to paint! Add papers, materials and other soft furnishings to your artwork.

Details like speckles, highlights, and even splatters can elevate your artwork from ordinary to exceptional. Embrace this playful stage and let your creativity run wild!

Step 7: Reflect and Adjust

Step back and take a good look at your artwork. Does it express the emotions you intended? Don’t hesitate to make adjustments; sometimes, a few changes can dramatically improve your piece.

Taking the time to reflect deepens your connection to the art, turning it into a personal expression of your emotional journey.

Embrace Your Artistic Journey

This artistic adventure has enriched my life immensely. Through abstract flower painting, I express my emotions and create pieces that mirror my inner world. Each stroke tells a story, and every colour conveys a feeling in ways that words cannot capture.

I encourage you to tap into your emotions through abstract art. Whether you're an experienced artist or a beginner, painting with feeling offers immense freedom. Let your canvas become a diary of your experiences, and you will see how your artistic voice develops!

So gather your brushes, embrace the colours, and immerse yourself in abstract expression. You will find that art is not just a hobby; it is a healing journey enriched with purpose and passion. Happy painting!
