Almond Blossom Painting Workshop – Inspired by Vincent van Gogh

Step into the expressive world of Van Gogh in this guided painting workshop inspired by his iconic Almond Blossom. Celebrated for its delicate branches, bold outlines, and uplifting palette, Almond Blossom reflects Van Gogh’s unique ability to combine Japanese-inspired composition with expressive, textured brushwork.

Painted as a gift for his brother and sister-in-law to celebrate the birth of his nephew, Vincent, Theo wrote, “We will name him after you, making the wish that he be as courageous as you.”

Vincent later went on to found the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and this painting remained especially cherished within the Van Gogh family.

Almond blossom trees bloom early in the south of France and symbolize new life. The painting depicts large flowering branches set against a bright blue sky, a subject Van Gogh loved to explore. The bold outlines and strong composition were inspired by Japanese woodcuts, which had a profound influence on his artistic style.

In this session, students will be taught how to create their own artwork using Van Gogh’s distinctive painting style. We’ll explore his use of colour, movement, and expressive mark-making, while learning how to build texture and energy into a composition. This workshop is suitable for all abilities, whether you’re new to painting or looking to develop your artistic confidence.
